All Hail Kubrick

The wonderful Netflix fairies brought 2001: A Space Odyssey, to my house this weekend. (FYI I'm such a movie addict that I utilize Netflix, Blockbuster, OnDemand & I fully claim my bf's movie library as my own). Its sad but true. But back to my point. Kubrick is quite possibly my most favorite director ever, especially considering that The Shining is my most ultimate favorite film. It is insane and beautiful.

I can't believe that it has taken me this long to see 2001 ASO, and honestly is leaves you speechless. Beneath all of the layers and layers of meaning in this movie I can only really come to one very concrete conclusion - Gareth Pugh loves Kubrick. Chris Kane quite possibly may have to credit him for serious inspiration too.

Space-like forms mingling with the baroque and rococo. Elegance in a viscous primate in a desert landscape. Film to fashion - Love it.

P.S. I cannot believe I didn't invest in Gareth's two tone boots. I could just kick myself.

Ok, so I don't usually buy things of any large monetary value - my shopping habits are restricted to Forever21 and Target. . . hey don't hate, I'm a poor post-college kid and my total school debt probably costs more than your car. H O W E  V E R, the wardrobe at All Saints is something that I have been lusting over for a long long time. Its too much to take because its so all so classic, delicate and beautiful.

Nymphet

One of the most intriguing editorials I've always loved. Four very young girls looking ethereal, much older than they look, inappropriately dressed for the age of 8 and absolutely captivating. Its always odd to meet a child who acts surprisingly like an adult, which is why this editorial is so refreshing. These images are also very reminiscent / highly inspired by the painter Mark Ryden, whom always seems to display child-like entities in the same light.

L A Z R

Drool on this. Designer Raphael Young designed this KILLER collection of Barbarellaesque geniousness. I can't really decide which one is my favorite but I think if I could have any pair (hahaha in my dreams!) I would take the ones second from the left on the bottom row. Epic and totally wearable. Its like, why can't we have these shoes and wear head-to-toe lame with hefty utility belts that holster matte black laser guns?

Hopefully on Net-A-Porter soon. Read the full article on The Cut.

On an unrelated note - I am going to marry the girl that is luxirare. She is a a goddess.

One of a Kind - Erie Basin

Yeah, if you get your jewelry from here, you and your girlfriend (and half of the fashion blogging world) won' t have the same pieces. Its actually the polar opposite of Forever 21 - as much as I love their $4.50 sparkly quick-fix concoctions. Erie Basin curates unique antique finds from the 19th and 20th centuries - yet they have a modern tone of voice. So beautiful and special, its exactly what you want your boyfriend to buy you for your anniversary. **hint hint** See it all here.

Half-Blood Prince

You know that feeling when you see someone's art project or design and all you can think is "I wonder how long it took them to make that?" After watching the Harry Potter last night, I am in awe of how breathtaking it was. Every detail is so beautiful and exact and completely more than you could have ever expected. The team that produces these films just keep getting better. CGI has never looked so elegant and captivating. Even the acting this time around was better than ever and I am so whole-heartedly convinced by their characters. Did everyone notice how superb the costume design was?? McGonagals's sharp shouldered robes, Luna Lovegood's holiday dress, the twins' emerald dresses at the Slughorn party, Malfoy's slim fit black suits, Narcissa Malfoy's Daphne Guinness-esque skunk stripe hair, Slughorn's layered tartans and plaids, and I swear Bellatrix LeStrange was wearing a Pamela Love necklace. It was all so much to look at and so beautifully rendered and a true masterpiece.

She calls herself a space warrior

This girl just started her blog and I can't wait to see what other things she does. She made these clothes herself and they look great! I'm crazy about that gray wool jacket. Check it out!

Wanna see a cool blog?

This girl is weird, insane, crazy, so creative, original, strange, eclectic, genuine and beautiful. She made this cake. Anyone who can combine pyramids, horror flicks and cake into ONE project is a fucking genius and a God. Go see her blog. You can call her L U X I R A R E.

Fall 2009 Couture Updates

Soo, I just checked out Style.com's updates on Fall 09 Couture collections. I hate to say it, but most of those collections were very hard to relate to. Honestly I cannot see the modern woman wearing most of the things that came out. Dior? Yuck. I don't have a problem with lots of color but this was just ridiculousness - it was way too Brady Bunch. Some of the more voluminous pieces at the end were ok, but really I just couldn't see anyone buying those pieces, especially now. I feel like their ideal client demographic became too limited, aka: richest old lady in Dubai who goes to cocktail parties everyday. I felt the same way about Chanel too. Ol' Karl seems to have fallen by the wayside on this one. I absolutely loathed the shapes of the shoes.

On the bright side of things there were some stand out collections - Gaultier, Valentino and Elie Saab. Gaultier was so adventurous - it was all space age and Barbarellaesque. Which I am gaa-gaa over. Valentino had youth on it's side with all of the short lace dresses and detailing to the max. I am in love with the whimsical masks. They complete the outfit in every way. They seem to be taken right out of the movie Hellboy II, something that one of the forest creature's royal family would wear. Elie Saab had a great fantasy narrative in it as well. All of the white fur and flowers were etherial. The white makeup was the absolute cherry on top.

Style.com's review of Elie Saab seemed unfair to me. They argued that he was too inspired by Lagerfelds Spring Couture 09 show, six months ago. While both shows worked on the same color palette they were entirely different conceptually. Saab's was about experimentation and working with fibers and creating a sort of impractical fantastical world. On the flip side, Lagerfeld's was extremely practical and very much ladies-who-lunch and it carried a dry monotonous tone. I like both collections but I just think that they are different and I don't think that Saab ripped off Chanel's collection in the least. What do you all think?

She Is It

Emma Watson has become more and more beautiful with each Harry Potter film. Even in the Sorcerers Stone as a wee witch there was something about her. This new spread in the Elle UK August issue proves it... along with her killer burberry adds? A M A Z I N G. She has a flawless sense of personal style as well, never too trendy just classic pieces and a neutral color palette.  I love me some Hermione Granger.

P.S. The Alexander McQuen ankle booties are killer.

Pentagrams . Crosses . Snakes . Crystals

In my jewelry box...

I get most of my jewelry from F21 (its good and cheap). The chunky gold bracelet is Juicy Couture, the rhinestone bracelet was great-grandma's, the silver bangle with crystal studded balls was a present from the BF, pentagram poison ring is from the sister.

I'm heading out to the Pasadena Rose Bowl flea market this Sunday - maybe I'll see some fellow bloggers there!

If I was allowed to dress however I would like, I would do something like this...

I love the skin tight leather, extra heavy trenches, Selma Blair's badass cross necklace, combat boots and the militant structure. Its a little bit unpractical but hey thats because there is no real need to dress like this. It's all prospective "hey maybe we'll be more combative and territorial in the future."

But really, this fashion is still seen as costume. Plus, where would someone like little ol' me wearing something like this? The only person who gets close - and gets away with it is Queen Michelle of Kingdom of Style. If you haven't seen her blog already, then you live under a rock and should visit her site immediately (right after you visit my blog shop).

Happy 4th

Nothing says Americana like Ralph Lauren.

When I was in Aspen I shot this picture of the Ralph Lauren window display because it is so quintessentially classic. Gotta love red white & blue.

The Full Spectrum

Every shoe for every occasion. From black, to grey, to chocolate, to white. My favorite in this set (its hard to decide, I love all my children) are the Gareth Pughs. Futuristic mod. You can't beat that. I am partial to Kirkwood's hoof-like inventions though...

Today, I would wear this...

If I could afford this... On sale at Luisaviaroma.com. It looks sooo good with that racerback tank underneath. I don't mean to sound cheesy but that sheer blanket of fabric over naked skin just scream contemporary Egyptian goddess - and I love anything Egyptian. Haider Ackermann  you tease us.
